David grew up in on a farm in Kimbolton, and settled in the Waikato after living and working in Palmerston North, Hokitika,  and Te Kuiti.

Well known for his Jock cartoons which featured in the NZ Farmer for 34 years, David really enjoyed a good yarn, getting people involved in art and loved spending time creating drawings for schools and community organisations.
During his training for a Diploma of valuation and farm management, David worked on a sheep station in the Hawkes Bay, a cropping farm in Southland and a dairy farm in Waihi. He also worked in Wellington as a rural valuer. 
This gave him a good knowledge and insight into farming life in NZ.
